France: from a nuclear market to a storage market.
More solar, rising volatility and a new centralised capacity mechanism make France more attractive for battery storage. Revenues are shifting from aFRR towards capacity, mFRR and arbitrage.

Revenue stack
- aFRR (secondary reserve)
- Capacity auction open to batteries since 2024 — the main revenue so far. Requirement steady at 750 MW each way; prices falling as the market saturates. [2]
- mFRR & intraday
- RTE procures 1,000 MW of upward mFRR; spikes during system stress. MARI accession expected; intraday deepening but smaller than in Germany. [2]
- Capacity mechanism (new, centralised)
- From winter 2026/27 RTE is the single buyer. First auction: €28,183/MW for all technologies. T-4 auctions not before 2030. [3]
- Arbitrage
- Day-ahead spreads roughly doubled in 2024–2025; more solar → more negative hours and curtailment. [4]
- FCR
- About 500 MW of batteries certified ≈ total requirement — saturated, little upside expected. [4]
Grid & connection
- Double grid charging
- TURPE 7 (since 1 Aug 2025) adds an optional tariff component for storage (injection + withdrawal) — initially only in selected grid zones. [4]
- Queue
- About 90 % of the 14 GW seek a transmission connection. Roughly 2.8 GW accept limited connection offers (injection/withdrawal caps) to connect faster. [1]
- Largest project
- Cernay-lès-Reims (Marne), 240 MW / 480 MWh, operating since early 2026. [5]
Estimate capacity revenue 2026/27
Certified capacity × auction price. How much capacity RTE certifies for a battery depends on factors such as duration — enter your own certification.
